LifeStore Announces 2018 Scholarship Winners (Ashe)
Ashe County High School graduate, Jake Richardson has been named a recipient of the LifeStore Bank and Insurance Merit Scholarship for $1,000. LifeStore awards this scholarship to graduating seniors based on a combination of academic achievement, financial need and extracurricular activities.
“LifeStore is proud to be a community partner by supporting local education through events in our schools, partnerships within the classrooms and scholarships.” said Judy Current, Director of Marketing and Strategic Growth. “This year we awarded eight scholarships to Ashe County High School graduates.”
Jake has a love for sports, playing football, basketball and baseball his first two years of high school and football and baseball his junior and senior years. Jake was a member of the National Beta Club and Rho Kappa, the social studies honor society. He is also a graduate of the Dick Miller Leadership program and is active in St. Francis Catholic Church. Jake will be attending Appalachian State University where he plans to major in Political Science. Jake is the son of Brian and Terry Richardson of Jefferson.
In addition to Merit Scholarships, LifeStore awards a scholarship for the children of LifeStore employees who continue their education after high school. This year LifeStore awarded employee scholarships to these Ashe County High School graduates-Hannah Barker, Corey Carter, Caroline Current, Zeb Duvall, Maddy Houck, Tate Hudler, and Morgan Shatley. Each of these students will receive up to $2,000 in scholarship money to continue their education.
Hannah Barker is the daughter of Mitchel and Pam Barker, LifeStore Group Benefits Producer. Hannah has been involved in the National Technical Honor Society and Calvary Baptist Church youth group. She was named the Ashe County Youth Volunteer of the Year, where she volunteered over 100 hours with Hospice. Hannah will attend Wilkes Community College and complete her Associates in Art. She plans to transfer to Appalachian State to obtain a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education.
Corey Carter is the son of Tim and Robin Carter, LifeStore Risk Management and Security Officer. Corey played golf throughout high school, qualified for Regionals and was Honorable Mention All- Conference. Corey also played football his freshman and sophomore years. He has been active in the Calvary Baptist Church youth group and serves as a volunteer fireman for the Glendale Springs Fire Department. Corey is planning to attend Wilkes Community College and will be studying Industrial Engineering Technology.
Caroline Current is the daughter of Cameron and Judy Current, LifeStore Director of Strategic Growth and Marketing. Caroline was named Mountain Valley Conference Tennis Player of the Year, All Conference in Soccer, and Female Athlete of the Year for Ashe County High School. She began dance lessons at age two and has been teaching and choreographing routines since 9th grade. Additionally, she has also been involved in First Baptist Church youth group; Rho Kappa, social studies honor society; Mu Alpha Theta, math honor society and the National Beta Club. Caroline will be attending UNC Chapel Hill and plans to major in Biology and minor in Dance.
Zeb Duvall is the son of Lyndell and Micaela Duvall, LifeStore Financial Consultant. Zeb was active in the National Tech Honor Society and works part time at Ingles and Appalachian Tech Utilities. Zeb will be attending Wilkes Community College to earn an Associate’s in Engineering, and then he plans to transfer to a university to major in Mechanical Engineering.
Maddy Houck is the daughter of Brianna Ashley, LifeStore Controller, and Greg Ashley, LifeStore Insurance Producer and Danny and Christy Houck. Maddy lettered in soccer all four years, and was named All-Conference Honorable Mention her senior year. She also played basketball her freshman and sophomore years. Maddy was active in HOSA, Health Occupations Student Association as well as Rho Kappa, social studies honor society; Mu Alpha Theta, math honor society and the National Beta Club. Maddy will attend UNC Chapel Hill and plans to major in Nursing.
Tate Hudler is the nephew of Audrea and Martin Little, LifeStore Market President. Tate lettered in baseball three years in high school and was All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-conference his junior and senior years and was named MVP by his team his senior year. He also played football and is a member of Midway Baptist Church youth group. Tate will attend East Carolina University and major in Engineering.
Morgan Shatley is the daughter of Julie Miller, LifeStore Financial Consultant, and Chris Miller, LifeStore Facilities Manager, and Cameron Shatley. Morgan plans to have her CNA license in December, and is attending Wilkes Community College to study Nursing to receive her RN. She will then attend Appalachian State University for her Bachelors in Nursing.
